Football at the 1904 Summer Olympics

At the Summer Olympics in 1904 for the second time football matches were held. Again attended no national or representative teams, but only three football clubs. The games were all played on the Francis Field in St. Louis and lasted only 30 minutes twice.

Participant

For the competition, the Canadian team Galt FC from Ontario and two regional American school teams from St. Louis ( Christian Brothers ' College, St. Louis and St. Rose School of St. Louis) reported. Galt was there not an unknown team in the Americas; the club was able to win the 1901 championship in all three age groups and was also master association in 1904.

In Europe, there was little interest, to embark on the long and expensive trip to St. Louis. In Germany, although there were plans to send a team; but these were dropped again in September 1904.

Match Results

The Galt FC won its two games clear. The two American teams separated in the first meeting on 20 November 0:0 draw. In a play on 23 November 1904, finally, the Christian Brothers ' College prevailed 2-0. Some reports also is another goalless game of the two teams on 21 November, the speech, there it was, however, a regular league match of the two colleges.

The small provincial town of Galt, about a hundred kilometers southwest of Toronto and now part of Cambridge (Ontario), her team celebrated enthusiastically after returning. The Left Wing of the Christian Brothers ' College, Joseph Lydon, also successfully participated at the Olympic boxing tournament in 1904 and finished third in the welterweight division. The then 16-year old goalkeeper Louis Menges later belonged to the Senate of the State of Illinois.
