Forth (Album)

Occupation

Forth ( English for preview ) is the fourth and final studio album by the band The Verve. It was released on 25 August 2008 after the reunion of the band in the previous year. It reached # 1 on the British album charts and was ranked # 10 with the best album of the band placement in Germany at all.

Description

After the separation in 1999, the band found in 2007 in original line-up back together in the studio. The album showcases the musical maturation of the individual members during the band break and still quoted mainly old game pattern of the band. So remember the songs " Sit and Wonder" and " Numbness " clearly the groovy Soulrock times of A Northern Soul. "Judas ," " Noise Epic " and " Columbo ", however, are linked to the early spherical phase of the band and are influenced by improvisational tive, experimental song structures. Striking are the clean sound of bass and drums, which were recorded almost textbook-like. While the effect guitar by Nick McCabe the songs with live atmosphere lends a heavy, progressive severity.

The first single "Love is Noise " takes on atypischerweise disco elements and contains with use of vocoder and synthesizer for the band unusual electronic sounds. But the album also features quieter ballads as the second single, " Rather Be ". These are very strongly influenced by the last folk songwriting Richard Ashcroft, as he had developed it on his solo albums. Only with " Valium Skies " is a song in the style of Britpop anthems that would have fit on the successful album Urban Hymns.

Status

The band recorded the album in the State of the Ark Studios in London and at first largely self-produced and mixed. The album was released as Ashcroft's last solo album for Parlophone.

Criticism

The reviews of the music press were unanimously negative for the album. Richard Ashcroft himself described the album in the wake of a nostalgic endeavor, from which he could hardly attract potential for new developments. Simon Jones ( bass ) threw Ashcroft then to want to have only fired with the reunion his stalled solo career.
