Fourcès

Fourcés is a municipality with 281 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) in southwest France near Castelnau- d'Auzan. It belongs to the department of Gers and the Canton of Montréal and is located in the Midi-Pyrénées region.

Les plus beaux by the Association villages de France Fourcés was declared one of the most beautiful villages in France.

Geography

Fourcés lies in the valley of the Auzoue, at an altitude 64-180 meters above sea level. The municipality covers 23.72 km ².

The Foundation Association des plus beaux villages indicates that Fourcés the only Bastide is situated in the Gers department is that is non-checkered, but concentrically applied.

History

Fourcés is mentioned in a charter of 1068 as a fortified place and one of the most important fief of Gascony. The medieval town was fought hard until the 15th century between France and England. Originally called Castelnau ( castellum novum ) applied ( with a castle and surrounded by a circular wall), Fourcés was rebuilt in the 13th century Bastide.
