Francisco Bru (1901 )

Francisco Bru Sanz ( born April 12, 1885 in Madrid, † 10 June 1962, Málaga), also known as Paco Bru, was a Spanish football player, umpire and coach.

Playing career

Bru started his career as a 16 -year-old FC Internacional. Between 1906 and 1911 Bru played for FC Barcelona. In the final of the Spanish Cup in 1910 Bru formed together with Manuel Amechazurra the defense of FC Barcelona, ​​who secured his first national title with a 3-2 victory over Español Madrid. In the same year he won the Catalans the Pyrenees Cup, one of the first international football competitions at all. In 1911 he moved to city rivals RCD Español and remained there until 1915. For his last stop as a player, he returned to FC Barcelona. In his time as a player, he won six times the Catalan Championship ( two with RCD Español), one Spanish Cup and twice the Pyrenees Cup.

Refereeing

After his playing career, he decided to become a referee. In his first match under his leadership, he tucked a pistol under his referee clothes, in order to "guarantee quiet game " one. Already in 1916 and 1917, he whistled the playoffs for the Spanish Cup.

Coaching career

1920 the Spanish Football Federation decided to send a team to the Olympics in Antwerp. Bru was one of three persons who were to compose the players for the team. The first training Bru was the only attendees of the three, the other two were missing due to " family problems ".
