Francisco Eduardo Tresguerras

Francisco Eduardo Tresguerras ( born October 13, 1759 in Celaya, Guanajuato; † August 1, 1833 ) was a Mexican architect, painter, sculptor, and poet.

Life

Tresguerras who lived in colonial times in Mexico and at the beginning of the early independence and worked, was a young man, first in Mexico City in a monastery and studied at the Real Academia de San Carlos de las Nobles Artes painting with Miguel Cabrera. He changed his mind but soon abandoned his studies, returned to his native town and married there. At first, he dealt with artistic painting, sculpture, woodcarving and engraving, but soon requested permission to work as a builder or architect must. The architecture he learned from the Jesuits, who aushändigten him a copy of the writings of Giacomo Barozzi da Vignola.

His first work was a 1797 Neptune Fountain in Querétaro, where memory of King Charles IV, he also designed an arch. In the years between 1802 to 1807 he worked on his most important architectural works, the reconstruction of the " El Carmen " Church (originally from 1752) in Ceylaya in the classical style, which also contains several sculptures date from his hand. In the local " Los Cofrades " Chapel contains a portrait of the Last Judgment ( " El Juicio Final" ). In a similar classical style he built for his subsequent burial the chapel of the " San Francisco " Church and a bridge over the La Laja. Other buildings of Tresguerras are in Guanajuato, San Luis Potosi, San Miguel el Grande, Salvatierra, Salamanca, Irapuato and in other cities of Jalisco. In the " El Carmen " Church in San Luis Potosí are also two of his frescoes. Picturesque he also preferred the classical style, and dealt mainly with portraits, including one of his wife in 1787 and a self-portrait of 1794, as well as with religious themes and landscape painting.

He also wrote poetic satires and devotional works. 1962 published some of his critical writings under the title " Ocios Literarios " (engl.: "Literary museums "). Because of its sympathies to the Mexican independence movement Tresguerras was arrested in 1811.

Many of his works are now in the possession of the Museo Nacional de Artes Plásticas in Mexico City. 1951, a previously unpublished biographical sketch entitled " Tres zamoranos Ilustres " was in Morelia (German: "Three illustrated Zamoroner " ) discovered who had written his friends. In his home town is located today was named after him Centro Regional " Francisco Eduardo Tresguerras " with an art academy.
