The French Navy ( Marine nationale French full name ) is the navy of the French armed forces ( Armées françaises forces ). It is the second largest Western European navy after the British Royal Navy. Their motto is: " Honneur, Patrie, Valeur, Discipline " (Eng. " Honor, Country, bravery, discipline ").

History

That appeared during the late medieval Crusades in the 13th century French Navy was from the 17th century until the beginning of the 20th century, the second largest navy in the world after the British Royal Navy. Despite repeated defeats and heavy losses, especially against the Royal Navy, the French Navy, a naval power of the first rank and the British always remained a largely coequal rival. The residue of the Royal Navy in number of ships and training drill repeatedly tried to compensate by structural and technological innovations in shipbuilding, the French Navy.

Organization

Since February 2008, Admiral Pierre -François Forissier stands as Commander and Chief of the Operations Staff of the Navy at the top of the French Navy. Most important bases include Brest on the Atlantic and Toulon on the Mediterranean. The Navy is organized into five areas:

  • Naval Aviator ( Aéronautique navale )
  • Marine infantry ( fusiliers marins ) and Naval Commando - Special forces ( Commandos de Marine) consisting

  • 7 FREMM frigates are planned for testing, or construction.
