Gáivuotna–Kåfjord

Kåfjord ( Sami Gáivuona ) is a municipality in northern Norway in the province (county ) Troms. Administrative seat of the commune is the place Olderdalen.

The inhabitants are predominantly Kåfjords seeds, but today mostly speak Norwegian as their native language as a result of the long state assimilation pressure.

In place Manndalen ( Sami Olmmaivaggi ) is organizing the international Ethnofestival Riddu Riddu annually.

Geography

The municipality is located on the east side of the Kåfjord Lyngen Fjord and is named after one of its tributaries, the 25 km deep in a southeasterly direction to cut into the inland Kåfjord named. The territory extends south to the Finnish border. Here is - just situated on the Finnish side - with 1324 meters above the sea of ​​Haltitunturi, the highest point of Finland. Highest mountain in the municipality is the 1375 meter high Isfjellet whose massive rises almost vertically from the south end of the Kåfjords. At the highest elevations also include the Nordmannviktind ( 1336 m), the Raisdouttarhaldi ( 1365 m) and the Njižžinvarre ( 1306 m).

The coastline in the area of the municipality Kåfjord is about 70 kilometers. It involves towering cliffs, punctuated by some of wide hollows of which are the most important Kåfjorddalen, Manndalen, Olderdalen and Nordmannvikdalen. Through this valley flows the main rivers, of which the Guolasjokka ( in the upper reaches Smulkkojavrek called ) with 40 kilometers the longest. It flows through the Guolasjávri, with about 10 km ², the largest of several hundred Fjellseen within the municipality.

Sabitjåkka as well as some " Hytter " on and around the Guolasjávri are not permanently inhabited, but only in the short time of the summer. This is also true for large parts of the settlements in Manndalen or Kåfjorddalen that do not lie directly on the sea.
