Gene Quill

Gene Quill (actually Daniel Eugene Quill, * December 15, 1927 in Atlantic City, † December 8, 1988 ) was an American jazz alto saxophonist and clarinetist -. He has played with, among others, Phil Woods.

Life and work

Gene Quill has thirteen years of professional musicians, and worked with Jerry Wald, Art Mooney, Buddy DeFranco, and later with Claude Thornhill, Gene Krupa, Dan Terry and Quincy Jones ( This Is How I Feel About Jazz ). In 1957 he played with on an album by John Coltrane and directed by Phil Woods a formation called Phil and Quill, where she appeared with various accompanying musicians in New York nightclubs. In 1957 he worked on the album A Swinging Introduction to Jimmy Knepper. He then worked at Johnny Richards and Nat Pierce. At the beginning of the 1960s he played in the Gerry Mulligan Concert Jazz Band and toured with his band through Europe, after which he played as a freelance musician in New York. From 1966 Quill had a own quartet. He also took on plates with Mundell Lowe, Jimmy Knepper, Quincy Jones, Manny Albam, Bill Potts, Michel Legrand, and Billie Holiday. Finally, he had to cancel due to illness of his career.
