George Ball (diplomat)

George Wildman Ball ( born December 21, 1909 in Des Moines, Iowa, † 26 May 1994 in New York City ) was an American lawyer and diplomat.

He is best known as the voice of Pazifismusbewegung against the Vietnam War, when this escalated in the 1960s. Under President John F. Kennedy, he was from February to December 1961, first Under Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the United States with responsibility for Economic Affairs ( Under Secretary for Economic Affairs ). Thereafter, he was promoted to Under Secretary of State, which he was Deputy Secretary of State Dean Rusk in 1966 under Presidents Kennedy and Johnson on 4 December 1961 to 30 December. From June 26 to September 25, 1968, he served as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.

The Michigan State University awarded him an honorary doctorate in 1976.
