GFA League First Division

The GFA League First Division, the highest division in football in the Gambia and has been held since 1940.

Game Mode

It occurred twelve teams in a round-trip round against each other. The team that took first place at the end of the season, is Gambian football champions. The master receives 75,000 Dalasi ( D) and each team involved 10,000 D (June 2011).

History

The league was started in 1940 in the British colony of Gambia as " Bathurst League in 1940 ," these clubs all came from the capital Bathurst (1973 renamed Banjul). About the clubs, there is conflicting information, according to a source, there were: Augustians, East End Lions, Dingareh, Hotspur, School XI, Young Lions, The Gambia United, RAF, Navy, MSU, Heroes and Black Diamonds. Another source lists the following teams up with: Police FC (MSU? ) Medical XI (presumably Medical School XI), Gambia Regiment, UAC and Rainbow.

For the 1967/68 season the number of teams was increased to eight. An increase of the clubs involved in a number eleven was carried out in the Gambia season 1974/75. In the following 1975/76 season the number was set to six clubs down. In the 1990s, they played the championship again under ten clubs. 2008, the number of participating teams increased from ten to twelve of the Gambia Football Association ( GFA ).
