Giacomo Conti (artist)

Giacomo Conti ( born November 2, 1813 in Messina, † April 9, 1888 in Florence) was an Italian painter from Sicily.

Life

Conti was known as a history painter and painter of religious subjects. He received his first training from Letterio Subba (1797-1868) in Messina. With a scholarship from his hometown of Conti in 1834 went to Rome at the Accademia di San Luca, where Francesco Coghetti (1804-1865) and Francesco Podesti ( 1800-1895 ) were his teachers.

The end of 1836 he returned to Messina, where he worked as a portraitist and illustrator. In 1843 he developed at the Istituto di Belle Arti in Siena on. In Florence, he presented his first painting " La Disfida di Barletta " of that was acquired by the Grand Duke Leopold II. In Florence, a cycle of four paintings depicting scenes from the Risorgimento was born.

Many of his paintings and frescoes painted for Messina went on the great earthquake of 1908 lost, including the painting "The Sicilian Vespers " and " Romeo's death," and the ceiling fresco "History of St. Benedict ."

He was represented at exhibitions, including in Florence (1861 ) and Turin ( 1884).

Much of his artistic estate is located in the Gabinetto Disegni e Stampe (Florence ) and the Accademia di Belle arti ( Carrara)
