Life and work

After serving in the U.S. Army, he was from 1953 to 1956 regular pianist in the band of Lester Young. After that he played in the formation Les Jazz Modes of Charlie Rouse and Julius Watkins, also with Sonny Stitt and Bennie Green. From 1959 on, he was a sideman of Lambert, Hendricks And Ross (or Bevan ). After the dissolution of the vocal ensemble went Mahones mid-1960s to Los Angeles, worked as a freelancer and in the Hollywood studios. He had at this time his own trio and also worked with Lou Rawls, Art Farmer, James Moody, the Harold Land / Blue Mitchell Quintet, Jim Hall, Benny Carter and with the singers Leon Thomas, Abbey Lincoln, Joe Williams and Big Joe Turner.
