Giovanni Canestri

Cardinal Giovanni Canestri ( born September 30, 1918 in Castelspina, Province of Alessandria, Italy) is an emeritus archbishop of Genoa.

Life

Giovanni Canestri studied at various universities of Rome, the subjects philosophy, Catholic theology and law. He received his doctorate in both canon law and in civil law and received on 12 April 1941, the sacrament of Holy Orders. He then worked as a pastor and high school teacher in different institutions of Rome. From 1959 to 1961 he served as spiritual director candidates to the priesthood of the Pontifical Roman Seminary.

1961 he was appointed by Pope John XXIII. Titular Bishop of Tenedus and auxiliary bishop in the diocese of Rome. The bishop ordained by Luigi Cardinal Giovanni Canestri Traglia, who had also ordained him a priest. In 1971 he took over the leadership of the diocese of Tortona as a bishop. In 1975 he was Titular Archbishop of Forum Clodii and again auxiliary bishop in Rome. 1984 John Paul II appointed him Archbishop of Cagliari and in 1987 Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Genoa - Bobbio, which was renamed in 1989 after the separation of the diocese of Bobbio part again in Archdiocese of Genoa.

June 28, 1988 Canestri was taken as cardinal priest with the titular church of Sant'Andrea della Valle in the College of Cardinals. The management of the Archdiocese of Genoa put Giovanni Cardinal Canestri 1995 down for reasons of age. As more than 80 -year-old cardinal he did not take part in the conclaves in 2005 and 2013.
