Gisela of Hungary

Gisela of Bavaria (c. 984 or 985 probably at Castle Abbach at Regensburg; † 7 May 1060 in Niedernburg monastery near Passau ) was Queen of Hungary. In the Catholic Church, she was beatified.

Life

She was the eldest daughter of the Bavarian duke Henry the Wrangler from his marriage to Gisela of Burgundy and sister of Emperor Henry II Her education took place in a monastery in Regensburg. Gisela was a student of Saint Wolfgang of Regensburg.

Gisela married around 995 probably at the age of ten years, Stephen, later King of Hungary.

After Stephen's death in 1038 she was taken pursued and captured. After 1042 by King Henry III. had been freed, he brought Gisela back to Bavaria, where she was abbess of the Benedictine monastery Niedernburg in Passau. Through them, the monastery received numerous donations. In Niedernburg she remained until her death. Her grave, a high grave of the late Gothic period to the original grave stone from the 11th century, in the monastery church has been preserved. Gisela sat down for the Christianization of Hungary a what earned her the enmity of the heathen National Party, and founded several monasteries and churches. So it was also the founder of the cathedral in Veszprém ( " Gisela Chapel " ), probably means the church tower in her hand on the Hungarian coronation mantle, which was originally a -given by it in Stuhlweißenburg chasuble. The Gisela Cross in Munich, she donated for the Regensburg grave of her mother.

Gisela is venerated as Blessed ( Festival on May 7th and 1st February). Her grave is the destination of many pilgrims from Hungary. Since 1996, also owns the Cathedral of Veszprém relics of her.

In Vienna Penzing ( 14th District ) Gisela street is named after her.
