History

1156 the place was first mentioned as Gouingen. Another source mentions the year 1160 as the date of first documentary mention in a document of the monastery Baumbach under the name Gowingen. The place name is derived from a Bavarian nobleman, Guowo or Gauwo. This suggests a Baiuvarii foundation.

The village church is one of the most beautiful rococo churches in Tyrol. Consecrated it is the Holy Cross and the martyr Laurentius. The builder was Andrae Hueber, the fresco painter Matthias Kirchner, both from Kitzbühel. The altars and holy figures were designed by Thomas Goinger Blieml. On the left side altar in the apse a remarkable Madonna, carved about 1480.

On Rehrobichl between Going and Oberndorf copper and silver was mined in the first quarter of the 16th century. The miners were located in the district of Prama. Prama is Celtic and means: where the blackberries grow. This is probably an indication of Celtic settlements. The Celts have been mined in this area as early as 800 BC, copper and silver. Closed the mine in order in 1773. In the peak period, some 12,000 kilograms of copper and to the 7,000 kilograms of silver were mined annually. The smelter was in the district bears sites of St. Johann. The deepest vertical shaft was 880 feet deep.
