Gonfalonier of the Church

The Gonfaloniere the Church, or Pontifical gonfalonier (Italian: Chiesa della Gonfaloniere, standard-bearer, Lat: vexillifer Ecclesiae ) was a military and political office of the Papal States. It emerged during the fight from the use of the papal banner. The Office was later largely ceremonial and political. In his nomination Gonfaloniere the two banners were awarded, one with the coat of arms of the Church ( vexillum cum armis Ecclesiae ) and another with the arms of the reigning pope (cum suis armis ). The Gonfaloniere was entitled ecclesiastical emblems ( this included the keys of St. Peter and the Padiglione ) on its own weapons usually only during his tenure, but on occasion durable to wear. Innocent XII. abolished both offices and replaced them with the office of standard-bearer of the Holy Roman Church (Italian: Chiesa di Santo Vessilifero Romana ), which was later given to the hereditary Patrizi Naro family.
