Gorno-Altaysk

Gorno- Altaisk (Russian Горно - Алтайск ) is the capital of the Autonomous Republic of Altai in the Asian part of Russia with 56 933 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is located in the southern West Siberia at the edge of the high mountains Russian Altai about 200 kilometers southeast of the city Barnaul. This is about half the distance between the Siberian city of Novosibirsk and the Mongolian border. It extends in the Valley of Maima, a right tributary of the Katun near the mouth. The region's climate is continental.

Gorno- Altaisk is the only city in the Republic of Altai; here lives about a quarter of the inhabitants of the sparsely populated Republic. The city is surrounded by the territory of Rajons Maima, but forms its own rajonfreien city circle.

The city has no railway connection, a connection to, 100 km away Bijsk is, however, at the project stage (2007). A few kilometers north-west, near the Gorno- Altaisk with practically grown together Maima settlement, there is a unused for local connections airport. By Maima the highway M52 leads ( the Tschujatrakt ) connecting Siberia with the high mountain part of the Altai and Western Mongolia.

History

In 1830 existed in place of today's Gorno- Altaisk, at the mouth of the creek Ulala (now in the Russian form Ulaluschka ) in the Maima a small altaiische settlement. With the influx of Russian settlers in the course of the 19th century was the major, the same village Ulala.

1922 Ulala administrative center of the Autonomous Oblast Oirot ( Oirots - obsolete designation of the people of the Altai ), and received city rights in 1928. 1932, the city in Oirot Tura ( Altay City of Oirots ) has been renamed. Culture, Education and sights

In Gorno- Altaisk the Gorno- Altaisker is State University ( Горно - Алтайский государственный университет ), which was created in 1993 from a Pedagogical Institute was founded in 1949 and is currently attended by 5500 students.

Here is ( НИИ истории, алтайского языка и литературы ) also a Research Institute of History, Language and Literature Altaiische resident.

Gorno- Altaisk has a theater and founded in 1918, today after the ethnographers, musicologists and composers Andrei Anokhin ( 1867-1931 ) named Republican Heritage Museum.

Economy

In addition to smaller enterprises of machinery and electrical equipment engineering, there are in Gorno - Altaisk only light and food industries. The city is primarily commercial, administrative and cultural center of the republic.

It is one of the cities with the lowest environmental problems in Siberia and is not least because the center of the tourist development of the Altai.
