Geography

The Göttingen forest, which is organized extremely rich in forests, extends to the south of the line mountain country, a part of the Lower Saxony highlands. It is located in the district of Göttingen east of Göttingen, immediately south of Nörtener Forest, west of the sub Eichsfeld and north of Reinhäuser forest with the mountain pair The same. The Göttingen forest, the forest and the Nörtener Reinhäuser forest form part of the Göttingen- North Forest each bucket. A few kilometers north-east is the Red Mountain ridge, behind the resin. Northwest of the Göttingen Forest is Bovenden, north-northwest Norten -Hardenberg, north Billingshausen, northeast Ebergötzen, east Landolfshausen, southeast and southwest and west peers Göttingen. The Göttingen Forest is located south of the Valley of the Rodebachs, a few kilometers west of the Seeburger lake, north of the Valley of Garte and Bramke and a few kilometers east of that leash.

The Göttingen forest is delineated mainly to the north, east and south by steep slopes. The delineation of the Göttingen Forest is still not always uniformly defined, so sometimes the one hand, only the south of the B called Göttingen forest in the strict sense 27 situated part without the Pless Forest, on the other hand are used for climbing area "Göttingen wood" north, east and south adjacent areas should be counted.

Nature Spatial allocation

The Göttingen Forest as part of the Lower Saxony mountain country is allocated as follows:

  • ( 37 Weser -Leine Bergland ) ( 373 Göttingen- Northeim forest ) 373.1 Göttingen Forest

Geology

The Göttingen forest is constructed of layers of limestone. In the recesses of the Lutter and Bratentals layers of Pleistocene and Holocene are pending. The predominant and highest part of the Göttingen Forest, namely the high plane-like surfaces of the northern Pless Forst from Hünstollen to Plesse Castle and the eastern part of the Lengder castle in the south of the Mack Röder tip to Södderich be determined by layers of the lower Muschelkalk, while in the more moving central and western part of the Göttingen forest predominantly found Trochitenkalk and Ceratitenschichten of the upper Muschelkalk. In the transition regions, the average limestone is present. In the area of the Long Night and the adjacent slope of Kleper there is an elongated trench of the Keuper, individual inclusions of the lower Keuper are also found in the southern part of the Göttingen Forest. To the north, east and south boundaries of sandstone areas of the Göttingen Forest, in the west Pleistocene silts and finally the Holocene alluvial clay of the Leine valley. In Trochitenkalk and in the lower Muschelkalk today numerous abandoned quarries were created in which the limestone was recovered as the predominant building material of the nearby settlements. The thinner, platy and highly friable layers, however, were only used as a material in road construction or to secure the service roads. The Kalkflächen the lower and upper Muschelkalk are usually only covered by a thin layer of humus and also offer the state of weathering any high-quality farmland. Settlements were therefore applied almost only in the regions of the middle Muschelkalk, in the spring a few small sources.

In the sandstone area of the southern Reinhäuser forest, is the largest Abri- group ( formed by erosion of rock overhangs ) in Central Europe. You are often in a confined space in the gorge-like rocky valleys between the line and the calibration field. In an area of about 30 km long and 6-10 km wide around 1,600 shelters today are captured. The sandstone has long been mined in quarries.
