Geography

Gräfenhain is as Waldhufendorf in 450 to 500 meters above sea level at the foot of the Thuringian Forest. The surrounding hills have partially heights of over 700 meters.

History

The place was built in the 11th or 12th century as a clearing settlement. The first mention of the town was in 1230, on the sale of an ownership interest of the counts of matches at the monastery George valley. The inhabitants were once mostly active in forestry, and later in the ceramics and doll making.

Gräfenhain 1557-1676 was affected by witch hunts. Five women came in witch trials.

In 1869 at the location of the porcelain factory Halbig, which has long been the largest employer in the city with 200 jobs. In the 19th century, several major fires occurred.

Attractions

For the village church of St. Trinity, the Duke put personally in 1727 the foundation stone. In the following years the church was fully equipped quality by the Gotha sculptor Graff, the court painter Georg Conrad Dörffling ( pulpit altar and organ pipes ) and the Arnstadt court painter Gottfried Wunderlich. The Gotha court organ builder Johann Christoph Thielmann delivered in 1731, the organ, which is now one of the most important Baroque works of Bach's time in Thuringia.   • Lived and worked in Gräfenhain the industrialist Karl Halbig, who had specialized in the manufacture of dolls.
