Heubach is a large market in the Lower Franconian district of Miltenberg, whose first documentary mention took place about 900 AD.

Geography

Geographical Location

Large Heubach is in the valley and is surrounded by the foothills of the Spessart and Odenwald. To market Großheubach include the hamlet Klotzenhof and Roßhof. The highest point of the market area is the 439 m high Ospisrain. Large Heubach is located on the Franconian Red Wine Hiking Trail. Further north on Main is located as the next place today Klingenberg am Main with the district Röllfeld. Between Röllfeld and large Heubach was until 1778 the St. Michaelis Church. Probably the associated settlement was abandoned about 1630 at the latest at the time of the Thirty Years' War in the 17th century because of a plague epidemic. Just across the River Main is Klein Heubach.

Name

Etymology

It has its name from the large Heubach Heubach, which flows to the Main in the municipality. The addition of large should distinguish the place from the same location on the opposite side of the Main. Previous names are Heidebah and Grotzenheidbach.

History

Structures

  • Historic City Hall

The Historic Town Hall was built in 1611/1612 by the architect Otto Oswald Heppeler in old Franconian half-timbered construction. The house served as the seat of a sub- office man for the office Prozelten. The ground floor was used as a prison. As the client acted Johann Schweikhard, Archbishop of Mainz and Elector and Caspar Mr. Eltz, Electoral main hissers Lord High Steward, council and bailiff to Prozelten.

  • Abendanz'sches House

The Abendanz'sche house is a house built around 1600 half-timbered house in the center of large Heubach. Over the centuries, some changes were made to the building. After the restoration in the period from 1987 to 1990, the timber was uncovered and restored the original façade. The house served among other things to the wine merchant Johann Simon Abendanz and the last abbot of the monastery Amorbach to live.

  • Engelberg Abbey

The Engelberg Monastery with its famous pilgrimage church was founded in 1300. The 1630 built for the Order of Capuchin buildings were handed over in 1828 by order of King Ludwig I of the Franciscans ( OFM) that operate today the monastery. Situated at 250 meters above sea level Engelberg can be reached via the 612 so-called angels squadrons of red sandstone.

  • Historical pagan worship

Huns stone or Heunenschüssel. On a Berga level near the present monastery of Engelberg. In the several meters high sandstone boulder circular depressions are roughly hewn.

  • Curiosity on the way to Klotzenhof

Monument to a mythical creature in of local spelling Elfetritschle more widespread elsewhere in the Palatinate.
