Gubkin

Gubkin (Russian Губкин ) is a town with 88 560 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ) in southwestern Russia, Belgorod Oblast. It is located about 500 km south of Moscow, 180 km north of the Ukrainian city of Kharkov and 100 km north-east of the regional capital Belgorod, on the river Oskolez. Closest city is Stary Oskol, which is 19 km east of Gubkin.

History

The city was founded in the 1930s in the area of the Kursk magnetic anomaly, a huge iron ore deposits in southwestern Russia. It was named in honor of the geologist Ivan Gubkin ( 1871-1939 ). 1955 Gubkin got city rights.

Economy

Gubkin has remained a major mining center, which is usually operated above ground. The raw material processing, building materials and food industry play an important role.

Education and Culture

Gubkin has a branch of the Moscow State Open University and a Polytechnic. There are in the city, a museum on the history of the Kursk magnetic anomaly.
