Korocha

Korotscha (Russian Короча ) is a small town in Belgorod Oblast (Russia) with 5877 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is located about 60 km northeast of Belgorod Oblasthauptstadt the homonymous river Korotscha, a tributary of the Neschegol in the river system of the Don.

Korotscha is the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons.

History

In the first quarter of the 17th century there was a small Russian fort on the Korotscha. Secured is the population in the area of the present town since the expansion of the defensive line Belgorod- Tambov - Simbirsk along the southern boundary of the former Russian Empire to ward off the Krimtatarenangriffe from 1638th

Initially Krasny gorod na Korotsche ( Beautiful city on the Korotscha ) called as soon as the short form Korotscha came into use after the river, under which in 1708 also the town charter was granted. The name has the "brevity " of the river towards (derived from Russian Korotki for short).

By the early 20th century, one of the larger district towns of the region, Korotscha lost its importance as a result.

During World War II Korotscha was occupied on July 1, 1942 by the German Wehrmacht and recaptured on 7 February 1943 by troops of the Voronezh Front Red Army during the Battle of Kharkov.

The city is located on the regional road R185 Belgorod- Novy Oskol - Alexeyevka - Rossosh, taught herein to Stary Oskol R189 branches.
