Valuyki, Belgorod Oblast
Waluiki (Russian Валуйки ) is a city in Belgorod Oblast (Russia) with 35.322 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).
Geography
The city is located about 225 km east of the Oblasthauptstadt Belgorod few kilometers east ( left) of the Oskol, a left tributary of the opening into the Seversky Donets Don.
Waluiki the Oblast is administratively subordinated directly and as the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons.
History
The town was founded at the former southern border of the Russian Empire in 1593 as a fortress and named after the nearby opening into the Oskol river Walui.
1797 town charter was granted.
During World War II Waluiki was occupied on July 6, 1942 by the German Wehrmacht and recaptured on 19 January 1943 by troops of the Voronezh Front Red Army as part of Operation Ostrogozhsk - Rossosh.

Culture and sights
In Waluiki a number of buildings from the 19th and early 20th century is preserved, so the high school, elementary school, the People's House and a hotel.
Nearby residues was founded in the early 17th century Assumption and Nicholas Monastery ( Успенский Никольский монастырь / Uspenski Nikolski monastyr ) and a cave monastery in the local chalk cliffs are preserved on the banks of the Oskol.
The city has a museum of local history and a Historical and Art Museum.
Economy
In Waluiki outweigh companies in the food industry, and there are companies for metal processing and construction materials industry.
The city is an important railway junction, which arrived in the late 19th century. Here the routes Kharkiv Balashov - Penza and Moscow Yelets - Donets Basin Cross ( kilometer 750).
Waluiki is located on the regional road R187 Novy Oskol - Rovenki.
