Guyuan (Chinese固原 市, pinyin Guyuan Shì ) is a prefecture-level city in the Autonomous Region of Ningxia Hui Nationality in the People's Republic of China. Guyuans management area, which in one municipality and four districts with a total of about 1.51 million inhabitants (as of end of 2003) is divided, occupies the entire southern tip of the Autonomous Region. It is bordered on the north by the cities of Wuzhong and Zhongwei (both in Ningxia ) and is in the east, west and south entirely surrounded by the province of Gansu.

The city of Guyuan is from the former government district Guyuan (固原 地区) emerged. After the State Council of the PRC had decided on 7 July 2001 to dissolve the government district and the county Guyuan (固原 县), this decision was implemented exactly one year later administratively and thus the prefecture-level city of Guyuan and - on the face of the former district of Guyuan - the Municipality Yuanzhou founded. On 31 December 2003, the Haiyuan county (海原 县) was removed from Guyuan and incorporated into the northern neighbor city of Zhongwei.

Administrative Divisions

At county level, Guyuan is composed of a municipality and four circles. These are:

  • Municipality Yuanzhou (原州区), 4965 km ², 490,000 inhabitants, the seat of the city government;
  • Circle Xiji (西吉 县), 3985 km ², 460,000 inhabitants, capital: greater community Jiqiang (吉 强镇);
  • Circle Longde (隆德县), 1269 km ², 190,000 inhabitants, capital: greater community Chengguan (城关 镇);
  • Jingyuan county (泾源县), 961 km ², 120,000 inhabitants, capital: greater community Xiang Shui (香水 镇);
  • Circle Pengyang (彭阳县), 3241 km ², 250,000 inhabitants, capital: greater community Baiyang (白 阳镇).
