Hachinohe, Aomori

Hachinohe (Japanese八 戸 市, -shi) is a port city in Aomori Prefecture in northeastern Honshu, the main island of Japan. The city has 233 919 inhabitants. Besides fishing, textile and wood processing plays an economic role.

Geography

Hachinohe is located southeast of Aomori, and north of Morioka on the Pacific Ocean.

History

The city is since 1 May 1929.

On 11 March 2011 Hachinohe was the Tōhoku earthquake and subsequent tsunami struck by the largest earthquake in Japan registered so far. In the port of Hachinohe considerable damage, large and small fishing boats were overturned and swept away, the streets in the harbor area were flooded arose. The port was dyed black by the oil flowed out, the cityscape changed. The evacuation lasted until the next day. One fatality was reported, two other people are still missing, all in the 60 years of life. 210 buildings were damaged and 915 more flooded, 100 cars swept away ..
