Haplogroup L1 (mtDNA)

Haplogroup L1 is a human genetics haplogroup of the mitochondria. Haplogroup L1 is found in sub-Saharan West and Central Africa. She rarely seems to occur in East and southern Africa. The haplogroup has two subgroups L1b and L1C. L1b occurs in West Africa the most. L1C is more common among the Bantu and Semi- Bantu - speakers of Western Central Africa.

Haplogroup L1 originated with the mitochondrial Eve and haplogroup L0 is an offshoot of it.

L1 branches into different haplogroups, the focus with the exception of L3 on Africa.

The former L1 subgroups ( L1d, L1k, L1A, L1F ) were re- classified into haplogroup L0 as L0d, L0K, L0a and L0f.

Haplogroup L1 occurred according to the researchers for the first time in Africa about 150000-170000 years ago.
