Haplogroup K (mtDNA)

Haplogroup K is a human genetics haplogroup of the mitochondria.

It is the most common subgroup of haplogroup U8 and has an estimated age of about 12,000 years.

In Europe it is widespread especially around the Alps and in the British Isles; the Iceman Ötzi belonged to a subset of the mtDNA haplogroup K1 to which are currently no known survivors. The haplogroup is found in low frequency in North Africa, the Middle East and South Asia, further have about 32 % of the haplotypes of the Ashkenazi Jews haplogroup K.

In his popular book The Seven Daughters of Eve Bryan Sykes is the original mother of this haplogroup the name Katrine.
