Härjedalen Municipality

Härjedalen is a municipality (Swedish kommun ) in the Swedish province of Jämtland County. It consists primarily of the historical province of Härjedalen but also to small parts of Hälsingland and Dalarna. The main town of the municipality is Sveg.

Other places are Funäsdalen, Hede, Lillhärdal, Norr - Hede, Ulvkälla, Vemdalen, Ytterhogdal and other smaller places. By Härjedalen leads the European Route 45 and the National Highway 84 and the Inland Railway.

Geography

The community, which is one of the largest surface area in Sweden, bordering Norway and lies for the most part in the Scandinavian mountains. It extends about 180 km along the river Ljusnan to the southeast and has a largest dimension of 110 kilometers in a north-easterly direction. The main town Sveg lies to the east of the town in the valley of the river Ljusnan. In the center of the municipality is the National Park Sonfjället, habitat for the southern brown bears tribe in Sweden. A few kilometers north of it the tourist center is Vemdalen, and in high mountains near the Norwegian border Funäsdalen.

Economy

The main industry of the municipality is tourism. Vemdalen, Lofsdalen and the high mountains are the main tourist areas. The forestry, traditional industry of the community, is of some importance, while the industry with about 13 % of the employees plays only a minor role.
