Harlingen, Friesland

( Listen / i?) Harlingen ( Frisian and Low German: urine ) is a port city in the Dutch province of Friesland.

The name of Harlingen is probably due to the manor Harlinga and has nothing to do with the East Frisian land Harlingen. On 1 January 2013, the city had 15,851 inhabitants.

Location and economic

Economically Harlingen depends mainly on agriculture, marine, sea fishing and tourism. Thus, there are ferry services to the islands of Terschelling and Vlieland West Frisian. About eight kilometers south of Harlingen begins the final dike that separates the IJsselmeer from the Wadden Sea. The ports allow maritime access to the province of Friesland. The new fishing port is also used by the large trawlers from Urk. Above all mussels are brought ashore. Harlingen has some small shipyards, where, however, only yachts to be built.

History

In the year 777 Gustavus Forteman founded in Almenum the first Christian church in Friesland. To 1157 the monastery Ludingakerke of Eilwardus Ludinga was founded. The monks put on canals, to boost trade. This won the west of Almenum lying, of two " terpene " ( mounds ) formed Harlingen so important that it became a town in 1234. The city used to have a heyday when they economically oriented to Holland. Formerly the place was Western, but the sea tore multiple country away, so that the place shifted slowly. 1543 and 1565 were made extensions to the north, which made the Noorderhafen to the inland port. 1574 had on the orders of the governor of the Duke of Alba, Caspar de Robles, the levees are raised on the Frisian coast. In 1579 the city was expanded due to the influx of Flemish Mennonites to the east. Due to increased maritime trade with the residents of North and Baltic Seas followed in 1598 an extension of the city to the south. 1644 the Frisian fleet was moved to the Zuiderhafen. Merchant shipping dominated but further Harlingen. There was scheduled services to the West Frisian Islands, in the province and the ports of the Zuider Zee to Amsterdam. Even today a large number of goods are transhipped in the ports of the city, for example, wood, gravel and cattle.

Events

  • Through the range of Harlingen elfstedentocht, the famous skating marathon race runs along the eleven Frisian cities.

Tourist

The downtown Harlingen is worth seeing because of the quaint old houses with stepped gables (1600-1800), the canals and harbors. The Reformed Church and the town hall dating from the 18th century.

The City Museum Hannemahuis has a space that recalls the native of Harlingen writer Simon Vestdijk.

The harbor is particularly popular through the Wadden Sea with sailors. In season, there is here a brisk business in traditional and flat-bottomed boats, including the so-called skûtsjes. Since the harbor stretches to the inner city, all this also offers a scenic view of the " landlubbers ".

On Saturdays, a weekly market held in Harlingen.
