Harri Sjöström

Harri Sjöström (* February 29, 1952 in Turku ) is a Finnish soprano saxophonist and bandleader in the area of free jazz and the new improvised music.

Harri Sjöström studied saxophone, flute and piano with Harry man, later saxophone with Leo Wright and Steve Lacy; In addition, he studied from 1974 to 1978 photography and film at Lone Mountain College in San Francisco Art Institute. After graduation, he left the United States and moved to Vienna, where he worked in the European improvisation scene. Harri Sjöström was formed at this time his first ensemble and organized among other things, numerous projects in Finland. He brought many artists of improvised music into the country; one of his earlier projects was a tour with Derek Bailey's Company, which thus played for the first time in Finland.

In 1985, Harri Sjöström moved to Berlin and played from 1986 in a duo with pianist Bernhard Arndt. In 1990, he met Cecil Taylor and worked in various projects with the pianists and composers. Sjöström founded the International Quintet Moderne, was a founding member of the trio The Player Is with Teppo Hauta -Aho and Philipp Wachsmann. In the 2000s he worked with his band Three Dog meters, including Bernhard Arndt and drummer Tony Buck. In 2005 he founded the formation Wait. In addition, Harri Sjöström occurs in solo performances and deals with film music. Sjöström also worked on recordings / performances with Evan Parker, Paul Lovens, Tristan Honsinger and Teppo Hauta -Aho.
