Hawthorne ( Hawthorn also ) is a city in Alachua County in the U.S. state of Florida with 1,417 inhabitants ( 2010).

The city is the birthplace of James Burrows Edwards, who was from 1975 to 1979 Governor of South Carolina.

Geography

Hawthorne is located 20 kilometers west of Gainesville and about 85 km south of Jacksonville.

According to the 2010 census, the then 1,417 inhabitants distributed to 681 households. The average size of a household was 2.53 and the average family size is 3.15 people.

25.7 % of the population were younger than 20 years, 22.4% were 20-39 years old, 29.0% were 40-59 years old and 23.0 % were at least 60 years old. The median age was 42 years. 47.8 % of the population were male and 52.2 % female.

The average annual income was $ 38,900, while 26.7 % of the population lived below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the mother tongue of 100 % of the population.

Hawthorne is on U.S. Highway 301 ( SR 200 ) and the Florida State Road 20 crosses. The nearest airport is Gainesville Regional Airport ( approximately 25 miles west).
