Newberry is a city in Alachua County in the U.S. state of Florida with 4,950 inhabitants ( 2010).

Geography

Newberry is located approximately 20 km west of Gainesville and 130 miles south-west of Jacksonville.

Demographics

According to the 2010 census, the then 4,950 inhabitants distributed to 2,068 households. The population density was 42.6 inh. / Km ². 79.6 % of the population were white, 14.4% African American, 0.2% Native American and 1.4% Asian Americans. 2.0% were members of other ethnic groups and 2.3% in different ethnic groups. 7.2% of the population were Hispanic or Latino.

In 2010, children under the age of 18 and 22.3 % of all households lived in 37.4 % of all households with persons at least 65 years. 73.4 % of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or a parent with offspring ). The average size of a household was 2.63 persons and the average family size is 3.07 people.

28.1% of the population were younger than 20 years, 27.2% were 20-39 years old, 27.5 % were 40-59 years old and 17.2 % were at least 60 years old. The median age was 37 years. 47.5 % of the population were male and 52.5 % female.

The average annual income was $ 49,623, while 18.4 % of the population lived below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the mother tongue of 96.07 % of the population spoke Spanish 3.30% and 0.63 % spoke German.

Newberry is traversed by U.S. Highways 27 and 41 and from Florida State Road 26. The nearest airport is Gainesville Regional Airport (30 km east).
