Micanopy is a town in Alachua County in the U.S. state of Florida with a population of 600 (as of 2010).

Geography

The town is located about 15 km south of Gainesville and about 120 km south-west of Jacksonville.

History

The town of Micanopy claims itself to be the oldest city in Florida. When the explorer William Bartram in 1774 came to this area, there were at the site of the present city already a settlement of the tribe of Seminoles. The Indians called the place " Cuscowilla ". Bartram's publications in the "old world " brought a large number of European emigrants.

The first post office was opened in 1826. The city was under the name " Wanton ", according to the then prominent inhabitants Edward M. Wanton, but the name Micanopy was also common, derived from a Seminole chief. 1831 was built to protect the inhabitants of a fort, which was on the 2nd Seminole War of importance. The historical importance of the area was confirmed in 1983 National Register of Historic Places. Micanole was location of the feature films " Cross Creek " (1983) and "Doc Hollywood " (1991) with Michael J. Fox and Julie Warner.

Demographics

According to the 2010 census, the then 600 inhabitants distributed to 317 households. The population density was 222.2 inh. / Km ². 74.2 % of the population were white, 22.2% African American, 1.3% Native American and 0.2 % Asian Americans. 2.2% were members of different ethnic groups. 2.8% of the population were Hispanic or Latino.

In 2010, children under the age of 18 and 32.1 % of all households lived in 22.4 % of all households with persons at least 65 years. 58.5 % of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or a parent with offspring ). The average size of a household was 2.17 persons and the average family size is 2.72 people.

18.2% of the population were younger than 20 years, 18.7 % were 20-39 years old, 36.4 % were 40-59 years old and 26.6 % were at least 60 years old. The median age was 51 years. 51.0 % of the population were male and 49.0 % female.

The average annual income was $ 40,172, while 9.2% of the population lived below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the mother tongue of 96.28 % of the population spoke Spanish and 3.72%.

Micanopy is crossed by U.S. Highway 441. The nearest airport is Gainesville Regional Airport ( 25 km north ).
