Haymana, Ankara

Haymana is a district of the Turkish province of Ankara 72 km south of the city of Ankara. Geographically located in the Konya Haymana level. The county has 40 537 and the city of 9,922 inhabitants ( 2008). The district is 2984 km ².

Etymology

The district is named after the mother Haymana Osman I. Hayme Ana ( mother Hayme ).

History

Archaeological excavations 1938-1990 brought the site to Gavur Kalesi days. The Hittite fortress located in the village Dereköy. Other tumuli at Türkhöyük and the village Oyaca show that the area was inhabited since the time of the Hittites.

After the Roman and Byzantine rule Haymana fell to the Seljuks in 1127. After the Battle of Köse Dağ it was temporarily part of the Ilchanats. Mid-14th century Haymana was annexed by the Ottomans. After a brief reign of the Timurid Haymana fell to the Ottomans and remained until the establishment of Turkey in 1923 part of the Ottoman Empire.

Resident

The majority of the population in Haymana represent the Kurds, who were probably deported here in the 17th century. Exceptional is under a part of the Kurds that they speak Leki, which are normally only found in Iran.
