Henry Jonsson

Henry Jonsson ( born May 12, 1912 in Håsjö, Jämtland, † March 9, 2001 in Stockholm) was a Swedish middle and long distance runner, who was successful in the late 1930s.

He started for the following clubs: Kälarne IK, SOLK Hellas and Brandkårens IF.

He was 1.81 m tall and in his playing days 70 kg heavy.

From 1940 he led the name Henry Kälarne.

By profession he was a fireman.

Career

There are also five titles ( 1935 to 1939 in a row) in the cross-country running (the distance was 8000 m long).

In addition, Henry Jonsson took with medal success at two events at the international level discharged in part - the Olympic Games in Berlin in 1936 and the European Championships in Paris in 1938.

  • In Berlin, he scored with 14:54,0 minutes, the fastest lead time and referred Lauri Lehtinen in fourth place. The Olympic champion from 1932 had its potential, however, just as little as exhausted Gunnar Höckert. In the finals ( which took place without German participation) put the two Finns too powerful. Höckert picked up in the new Olympic record time of 14:22,2 minutes far ahead Lehtinen ( silver in 14:25,8 min) the gold medal. Jonsson had no chance, but ran into 14:29,0 min personal best and was pleased about the bronze medal.
  • In Paris, Jonsson turn on two Finns: Taisto Mäki and Kauko Pekuri fought with the Swede a three-way battle, decided the Mäki in 14:26,8 min for themselves. In its wake Jonsson scored in 14:27,4 min again a personal best and won silver before Pekuri (Bronze in 14:29,2 min). It was only 17 seconds behind the Briton John Emery followed in fourth place.

Henry Jonsson won several record runner.

  • About 1500 m he set in 1940 with 3:48,8 min to a year earlier overflowed by Arne Andersson national record one.
  • About 5000 m between 1936 and 1939, he improved the national record total of four times. The first record ( 14:29,0 min), with whom he was undercutting the previous record of Edvin Wide by more than 10 seconds earned him winning the Olympic bronze medal. The last record ( 14:18,8 min) was exactly 6 seconds under his predecessor gates Tillman and had two years (until 1941) inventory.
  • Also in the list of world record runner Jonsson was pleased to enter: 5:18,4 min above 2000 m, achieved in Stockholm on July 2, 1937.   • 8:09,9 min over 3000 m, achieved in Stockholm on 14 August 1940. Jonsson thus improved the four -year-old record of the Finn Gunnar Höckert by 5.8 sec The record had exactly two years stock before Gunder Hägg pressed him on 8:01,2 min (today (2011) Best Performance: 7:20, 67 min, run in 1996 by Daniel Komen ).
