Herbert Müller ( born May 10, 1940 in Reinach / Switzerland, † May 24, 1981 at the Nürburgring ) was a Swiss automobile and motorcycle racer.

Sports career

The motor racing career of " Pillar Herbie " Miller began in the years 1959/60 as a motorcyclist. In 1961 he moved to Formula 3 and started with a Cooper - Norton mainly in uphill races. In 1963, he made ​​his Formula 1 debut at the Grand Prix de Pau for the team Scuderia Filipinetti. He focused on the result, however, continue to sports car racing, so there was no other Formula 1 stakes.

Müller was also very successful in uphill races. So he won the European Hill Climb Championship for GT cars in the years 1963 and 1965.

The first place in the Targa Florio in 1966 in a private Porsche 906 was his first major victory. He did it again in 1973 with a Porsche 911 Carrera RS against pure-bred race cars. There were a few more victories in major races. From 1977 Herbert Müller drove only occasionally races in various sports and GT cars, mainly in endurance racing.

On May 24, 1981 Müller came at the Nürburgring killed in the 1000 km race. His Porsche 908 Turbo crashed into the parked next to the slopes, yet almost fully fueled Porsche 935 by Bobby Rahal. Müller burned in his vehicle. As an indication that the driver is already seriously injured in the crash, is that he made ​​no effort to free himself from the vehicle.
