Highest unclimbed mountain

The currently highest unclimbed mountain in the world is on the current state of knowledge and definition of the 7570 m high Gangkhar Puensum in the Himalayas. It is located in Bhutan, on or near the Tibetan border.

The Gangkhar Puensum will continue to be the highest unclimbed mountain in the world, because since 1994, for religious reasons, no more climbing permits for the high mountains in Bhutan granted. In the 1980s, various climbing attempts had failed.

Since then, the Gangkhar Puensum may no longer be climbed, the question is asked after the second- highest so far unclimbed mountain. After the first ascent of Saser Kangri II East ( 7513 m), a mountain with a saddle height of 1450 meters, 24 August 2011, the 7453 meter high Muchu Chhish applies ( Vertical separation 263 m) in the Batura Wall in Western Karakorum as a candidate.

Up to the present time there is conflicting evidence on unclimbed mountains. Its status as the highest mountain in the world ascended to unanswered or a particular region is thus occasionally controversial and can not be determined with absolute certainty under certain circumstances. Difficulties in determining arising from insufficient knowledge of past ascents and various measurement and definitional problems.

So the Gangkhar Puensum could lose its status as the highest non- ascended the mountain, for example, by a change of definition of the concept of a mountain, if you would acknowledge peaks and ridges in the ridge with a saddle height ( prominence ) of well below 500 m in the Himalayas as a mountain, then you could Lhotse Middle East ( 8,372 m) advance to the highest unclimbed mountain.

Since now the highest mountains of all continents are mounted, the less high unclimbed mountains are hardly known and furthermore the status unclimbed difficult to verify, the mountaineering interest is now more on the first ascent of difficult routes on the highest and most famous mountains and faces of the world. This task is usually technically a significantly greater challenge compared to the still unclimbed six-and seven -thousanders.
