Hranovnica

Hranovnica ( German Grenitz or Gränitz, Hungarian Szepesvéghely - to 1892 Grénic ) is a municipality in Okres Poprad Prešov within the Region in Slovakia.

Geography

The village lies in the valley of the river Hornád the creek Vernársky Brook, which flows north into the Hornád. Hranovnica is located between the mountains Kozie chrbty in the north and Low Tatras and Slovak Paradise in the south. The village is at an altitude of 613 m nm Poprad is 10 km to the north and Ves is 27 km to the southeast.

History

Hranovnica was first mentioned in 1294 as Granich. The name is probably derived from the Slavic word granica ( = border), probably because of its location on the border of the counties Zips and Gemer. In the Middle Ages it belonged to the Cistercian Order, which was established in Spišský Štiavnik monastery. In addition to agriculture in this period was driven mining. In the years 1776-1945 the town was owned by the diocese Zips.

Today, the main sources of income are agriculture and service sector, which has developed thanks to the proximity of the National Park Low Tatras and Slovak Paradise.
