Geography

The city is located at an altitude of 115 m above sea-level and covers an area of ​​59.943 km ². Hurbanovo is located in the climatically warmest area of ​​the Danube lowlands south of the river Žitava about 12 km south of Nové Zámky and 15 km north of Komárno.

History

The city was first mentioned in 1357 as Gyalla and then later transferred to 1920 the Hungarian name Ógyalla

In the Kingdom of Hungary, the town belonged to the Komorner County. Ógyalla was the administrative seat of the chair district Udvard.

In January 1919, the city troops of the newly formed Czechoslovakia was occupied in 1920 and was officially the Slovak name Stara Dala. In the 1920s created by the Slovak settlers heading the colony Zeleny Haj.

By the First Vienna Award, it was as Ógyalla from 1938 to 1945 again part of Hungary. The town was renamed in 1948 in honor of the Slovak writer Jozef Miloslav Hurban in Hurbanovo.

The Hungarian -born politician Ladislav Basternák was (Hungarian László Basternák, member of the Party of the Hungarian Coalition ) murdered, former mayor of the town in place on 9 July 2010.

The Hurbanovo railway station is on the railway line Komárom- Nové Zámky. Furthermore buses to Nove Zámky and Komárno.
