Ignace Michiels

Ignace Michiels ( born December 7, 1963) is a Belgian organist at the St. Salvator's Cathedral, Bruges, concert organist, choral conductor and organ teacher.

Life

Ignace Michiels studied organ, piano and harpsichord at the Conservatory of Bruges. In 1986, he won a prize of Lemmensinstituut in Leuven. He continued his studies with Robert T. Anderson at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Herman Verschraegen at the Royal Conservatory in Brussels, and to Odile Pierre at the Conservatoire de Paris, where he graduated with a Prix d'Excellence. He also received a diploma for organ music at the Royal Conservatory in Ghent.

Ignace Michiels teaches organ at the Royal Conservatory in Ghent and at the Conservatory of Bruges. He is organist of the Sint- Salvatorskathedraal responsible for Kathedraalconcerten, a traditional concert series since 1952, the organ from a work by Jacobus Van Eynde ( 1717-1719 ) back, which has undergone three expansion reconstructions in the 20th century. , 1902 by LB Hooghuys, 1935 by Johannes Klais organ building and 1988 zones by Frans & Loncke. Today the instrument over 60 register has three manuals and pedal.

Michiels led the oratorio choir Cantores von 1990 until 2005. He prepared the choir concerts and recordings before, such as Beethoven's Ninth Symphony with the Radio Orchestra BRTN Brussels Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Alexander Rahbari.

Michiels worked in the jury of international organ competitions, and has given master classes. He works together with the Flemish classical radio.

International concerts

In 1999 he organized together with Gabriel Dessauer, cantor of St. Boniface in Wiesbaden, a project to bring together a century of violence to an end. On 19 August 2002 Michiels played an organ recital at the Rheingau Musik Festival in St. Mark in Erbach.

On 2 December 2006 he conducted the Concertgebouw of Bruges Bach's Christmas Oratorio with the Reger -Chor - International.

On 1 August 2008 he played Olivier Messiaen's Messe de la Pentecôte on the Flentrop organ in the Grote Kerk in Breda. He played works by Brahms with the Reger -Chor -International, supplemented by organ works by Otto Olsson, Julius Reubke, Joseph Jongen and Camil Van Hulse. On 27 October, he performed works by Schumann, Olsson, Flor Peeters, Gaston Litaize and Naji Hakim at the International Festival in Turin organist.

On 4 July 2010, he has performed with harpist Andrea Voets at the Festival de la Ribagorza in the Basílica de la Peña de Graus Graus.

On 3 October 2012, he was the organist at the premiere of the Missa Solemnis Boniface Fair for soprano, choir, children's choir, oboe and organ by Colin Mawby, with the choir of St. Boniface in Wiesbaden celebrates its 150th anniversary.

Recordings

Some of the Kathedraalconcerten were recorded organ works, including three of the eight sonatas by Alexandre Guilmant, and works for organ with pan flute and with the trumpet. Michiels appears with Organ Sonata, Op 175 by Louis Maes on the Jubilee CD 150 years Conservatory Bruges (1997).
