Iranian presidential election, 1985

The Iranian presidential elections in 1985 took place on 16 August 1985. The incumbent president Seyyed Ali Chamene'i was confirmed in office.

Prehistory

The renewed candidacy Khamenei was officially announced until shortly before the election and at the insistence of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, Supreme Leader. Iran was at this time in the First Gulf War. After Khamenei had announced his candidacy, he was regarded as the clear favorite. Two other candidates, Habibollah Asgar - Owladi and Mahmoud Kashani were nominated, Mehdi Bazargan disqualified by the Guardian Council prior to the election. The turnout was 54.78 %.
