Background

After the chart success of the live album No Sleep 'til Hammersmith is a record label Bronze Records wanted to release the next album as soon as possible. However, the band had trouble to write enough new songs. It came because of financial concerns, tensions between guitarist Eddie Clarke and Lemmy Kilmister vocalist and bass player and drummer Phil Taylor drug use interfered with recordings. As a producer Vic Maile initially was hired by the band Ace of Spades had taken. Phil Taylor did not like the sound of test shots and refused further work with Maile. After negotiations with other producers failed in their fee demands, Eddie Clarke took over at the urging of Lemmy Kilmister production. Taylor recorded the drum tracks and returned to the studio the back, singer Kilmister came only to the recordings of the vocal tracks into the studio. Both left the completion of the album and the sound engineer Will Clarke Reid. Lemmy Kilmister retrospect, described it as an error to have recorded the album without professional producers, it is an expression of complacency the band was. At least three of the pieces on the album were unfinished.

The album planned to tour began even before the official release of Iron Fist, which is why Motörhead initially played no new pieces. At the urging of Taylor the setlist for the title of the album was completed, which did not arrive well with viewers, because they did not know most of the songs. During the tour, the first time was a vertically adjustable platform used. At the beginning of the shows she was booted and was lowered while the music began. At the same time a huge fist should be used at their fingertips headlights were fixed and which should be opened slowly, while the stage was lowered in reference to the album title. However, the technique did not work and the thumb came only at the first show to use.

Reviews

Jason Birch Meier of Allmusic criticized the weaker compared to its predecessors production. The guitar was too much mixed in the foreground and sounding too polished. He holds Iron Fist anyway for a first class album and the last really good band. For the music magazine Rock Hard, the album sounds "compared to its predecessors somewhat slapdash ", what later the band's classics such as the title song could not hide. Jörg Brenzel by the online magazine noted Sleaze Metal, the album by many fans of the band is considered " weak disc ". The critic himself sees it as a good overall album, which contained with Heart of Stone, America and Loser some less good titles.
