Island Gardens DLR station

Iceland Gardens is a station on the Docklands Light Railway (DLR ) in the London Borough London Borough of Tower Hamlets. It is located in the Travelcard Zone 2 at the southern tip of the Isle of Dogs, at the Manchester Road in Cubitt Town district. She is one of three underground stations of DLR.

The entrance building is constructed so that natural light penetrates down to the platform. The station is named after the Iceland Gardens, a public park in the neighborhood. The famous attractions on the other side of the Thames, from here on display, including the Greenwich Park and the National Maritime Museum. A free alternative to go over to get to Greenwich, the Greenwich Foot Tunnel opened in 1902.

History

The original station was opened on 31 August 1987 and was then the southern terminus of the DLR ground network. She had been built at the site of the former railway station North Greenwich. This station ( not to be confused with the homonymous metro station ) was dated 29 July 1872 to 4 May 1926, the southern terminus of the Millwall Extension Railway was.

The DLR station was a little closer to the river bank than it is today, and consisted of two platforms on a viaduct. From 9 February to 16 April 1996 the track was south of Heron Quays closed because of an IRA attack in the South Quay station. After the construction of the extension under the Thames had begun to pass in the direction of Lewisham, the station had to be relocated. It was closed on 8 January 1999 and replaced by the new underground facility, which was opened on 20 November 1999 in conjunction with the section between Crossharbour and Lewisham. The original station and the southern end of the viaduct have been demolished.
