Italian Air Force Museum

The Aviation Museum in Vigna di Valle (Museo storico dell'Aeronautica Militare ) is an aviation museum on the history of the Italian Air Force and is one of the largest of its kind in Italy. It is maintained by the Italian Air Force and is located in Vigna di Valle, a suburb of Bracciano Lake Bracciano in Lazio.

History

The beginnings of aviation museum date back to the year 1913, when an area for aviation was at the initiative of the then Major Giulio Douhet in the military museum in the Castel Sant'Angelo in Rome set up in which you exhibited objects that since the establishment of military aviation being one in Italy had collected in 1884. 1933 shifted to these exhibits in another museum on the Tiber. The Air Force museum had to come to 1977 temporaries. Finally, it was decided after much hesitation to build on the historically significant former airfield of Vigna di Valle a modern museum complex and there to focus all previous exhibitions. By 1959, Vigna di Valle was on Lake Bracciano a primarily military-related water airport, on the last one SAR squadron operated on Grumman HU -16. Meanwhile, the Museum of Vigna di Valle is despite repeated expansion already reached its capacity limits, is therefore considered to set up on the lying east of Rome military airport Guidonia Monte Celio an outpost.

Exhibition

The Museum's mission is to gain valuable military-historical objects from the aviation sector, to restore, preserve and exhibit and make a scientific and scholarly contribution to the promotion and maintenance of aviation culture in this way.

The museum is divided into four pavilions. In the " scaler " ( 1,200 m²) are seen exhibits from the pioneering days of aviation to the First World War. In addition, here are some seaplanes from the interwar period. In the pavilion "Velo" ( 3,600 m² ) is a collection of biplanes and aircraft from the Second World War. The 60x66 -foot " Badoni hangar " was originally intended for the overhaul of seaplanes and now serves also as an exhibition hall. In the pavilion " Skema " (80 × 40 meters) are issued more modern aircraft.

There is also a documentation center that deals with the life and the Polar flights Umberto Nobile. The Documentation Centre also has a library and a collection of photos, paintings, medals, electrical appliances, and more.
