Itapúa Department

Population

The first inhabitants of this region were the Guaraní, the name Itapúa could therefore from the Guaraní words Itá Púa ( upright stone) or PUVA Itá derive ( sounding stone).

Today live in Itapúa addition to the descendants of the Guaraní and Spanish immigrants and the descendants of many other nations. So are the districts Bella Vista, Capitán Meza, Hohenau, Nueva Alborada and Obligado German colonies, and the districts Fram, La Paz and Pirapó were founded by Japanese.

About 60 percent of the population lives in the districts of Encarnación, San Pedro del Paraná, Tomás Romero Pereira, Edelira, Natalio, Capitán Meza, San Rafael del Parana, Alto Vera and Coronel Bogado. Between 1982 and 1992, a population growth of 3.6 percent was recorded.

Nature

In the north of Itapúa the southern part of the National Park Serranías de San Rafael San Rafael across the districts del Paraná, Tomás Romero Pereira, Edelira, Itapúa Poty, Alto Vera and San Pedro del Paraná extends. The northern part belongs to the Department of Caazapá.
