Ivan Frgić

Ivan Frgić ( born July 18, 1953 in Sombor ) is a former Yugoslav wrestler. He was the silver medalist at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal in Greco-Roman Bantamweight.

Career

Ivan Frgić, a blond Croat, began as a teenager in his hometown of Sombor Vojvodina with the rings. He was from 1968 to 1972 a member of the sports club " Lika " Zagreb from 1973 to 1980 by " Elektrovojvodina " Sombor. There, as well as in the Yugoslav national team, he was led by the coaches Ivan Cucic and Svetomir Damjanović in the world-class in Greco- Roman style. For the first time Frgić 1971 Yugoslavian champion bantamweight. But his first success on the international wrestling mat, he celebrated in 1970 in the Swedish Huskvarna when he body weight was European Vice Champion of the juniors in the class to 56 kg. His first major success in the seniors he celebrated in 1973 with the 3rd place at the European Championships in Helsinki. From that point on started Frgić regularly at international championships and thereby achieved great success.

He won at the 1974 World Championships in Katowice bantamweight bronze medal. He lost it against Józef Lipień from Poland and Farchat Mustafin from the Soviet Union, which included also in the years to its main competitors. At the European Championship 1975 in Ludwigshafen am Rhein Frgić achieved one of his greatest successes. He was charged with seven wins and only a single failure point European champions. In the decisive battles he defeated while Bernd Drechsel from the GDR and Farchat Mustafin. At the World Championships in 1975, he had this fantastic shape anymore because he lost to Józef Lipień and Farchat Mustafin and had to settle for sixth place finish.

In 1976 he went with high hopes for the Olympic Games to Montreal. In bantamweight him here in a preliminary round fight succeeded another victory over Farchat Mustafin. Despite a surprising defeat against Hungary József Doncsecz Frgić came in the final against the Finns Pertti Ukkola, he was defeated by the close on points. By winning the silver medal he had fulfilled all expectations.

1977 occupied Frgić at the World Championships in Gothenburg again an excellent 3rd place. Counter Farchat Mustafin and Pertti Ukkola he had this insert defeats. In the 1978 World Cup in Mexico City Frgić was put together with his opponent József Doncsecz already in the first round due to passivity of the mat and it loaded with 4 faulty points. However, he struggled with wins over Józef Lipień from Poland, Benni Ljungbeck from Sweden and the young German hope Pasquale Passarelli in the final against the Soviet Ringer Shamil Serikow before, which he was subject, however, and vice world champion.

In the following years, Ivan Frgić senior featherweight because he no longer managed the make weight for the bantamweight title. In the featherweight class, however, he won no medals at international championships. But with the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow, he was at least still on the 4th Place.

After the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow Ivan Frgić ended his international career Ringer. He was trained at the Sports University in Novi Sad for physical education teachers and coaches working as a wrestler.
