Jaber Saeed Salem

Jaber Saeed Salem born Jani Martschokow ( Bulgarian Яни Марчоков ) ( in Bulgaria born 3 January 1975) is a former Bulgarian- Qatari weightlifter.

Sporting career

Salem's first international competition was the European Junior Championships in 1995 in the city of Be'er Sheva. At the age of 20 years, Salem launched here under his birth name Jani Martschokow for Bulgaria in the class up to 108 kg and achieved 360.0 kg ( 160.0 / 200.0 kg ), which meant the third place. In the same year he took up at the Junior World Championships in Warsaw, where he lifted 355.0 kg ( 165.0 / 190.0 kg ) and again won bronze.

1999 was the Qatari federation win several Bulgarian weightlifters for themselves. Among them was Martschokow, who now took the name Jaber Saeed Salem. His first start for Qatar had Salem in the same year at the World Championships in Athens. Here he raised the first time in the Super Heavyweight over 105 kg, and could with 455.0 kg ( 205.0 / 250.0 kg ) behind Andrei Tschemerkin with 457.5 kg and above Hossein Rezazadeh place with 447.5 kg.

With his performance from the previous year, Salem was one of the favorites at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney. He increased his power to 460.0 kg ( 205.0 / 255.0 kg ), but was sufficient because of strong competition for fourth place. The winner was Rezazadeh with 472.5 kg before Ronny Weller with 467.5 kg and 462.5 kg Tschemerkin with.

At the 2001 World Championships in Antalya Salem was ( 210.0 / 250.0 kg ) won all three gold medals with 460.0 kg. In his last attempt he failed to 263.0 kg, which would have meant a new world record in the thrusting. In 2003, he won the world title in the snatch with 210.0 kg again, but resigned after no longer for thrusting.

Salem was indeed reported for the 2004 Olympic Games, but did not occur in unexplained ways.

2005 Salem placed on the World Cup with 446.0 kg ( 201.0 / 245.0 kg ) behind Rezazedeh with 461.0 kg and Yevgeny Tschigischew that lifted 457.0 kg. His last World Cup denied Salem in 2007 in Chiang Mai, where he worked with 435.0 kg ( 195.0 / 240.0 kg ) once again won the bronze medal in the total. The winner was Viktor Scerbatihs with 442.0 kg, before Tschigischew with 441.0 kg.
