Jack Kelly (actor)
John Augustus Kelly, Jr. ( born September 16, 1927 in New York; † November 7, 1992 in Huntington Beach ) was an American actor and politician. From 1957 to 1962 he starred in 83 episodes of the popular television series Maverick.
Early years and career
Jack Kelly was born as one of four children of Mr. and Mrs. Mary Ann "Nancy" and Augustus John Kelly, Sr.. His sister is the famous actress Nancy Kelly.
His first film role was played by Kelly in 1939 in love and life of the phone maker A. Bell, but was not mentioned in the credits. This was followed by some supporting roles in films of the 1950s. ( Forbidden Planet, murder in the clouds )
However, he only gained his role in the popular television series Maverick (1957-1962) International notoriety. There he played Bart Maverick, the older brother of Bret Maverick ( James Garner), as well as cousin Beau Maverick ( Roger Moore). Actually, James Garner was provided as the sole protagonist of the series, but the producers realized that her stint at impact could not be done because they needed a week for each episode. Therefore, Jack Kelly was introduced as an older brother, even though Kelly was actually only seven months older than Garner.
The consequences of Garner and Kelly were filmed from different production teams simultaneously. Sometimes both Mavericks occur in a sequence. After Garner got out after the third season, he appeared increasingly and took over in the fifth and final season of the sole lead role. Overall, he appeared in 83 of the 124 episodes.
After the end of the series Kelly was frequently seen in episode roles in television series.
In the early 1970s he moved to Huntington Beach, where he was mayor from 1983 to 1986.
Private life and death
Kelly was married from 1956 to 1964 to actress May Wynn. In 1969 he married Jo Ann Smith in Las Vegas. Their daughter Nicole was born a little later. 1992 at the age of 65 years, he died of a stroke in Human Hospital in Huntington Beach.
