The Jærbane is a railway line between Stavanger and Egersund in Norway. It forms a part of the route Sørlandsbanen and performs on the flat coastal plain of Jæren.

History

The line was opened in 1878 as a narrow gauge railway ( 1067 mm ), but in 1944 on standard gauge ( 1435 mm) was converted in 1956 and electrified. Due to high traffic the route between Stavanger and Sandnes was expanded to double track between 2006 and 2009. Since November 16, 2009, these works have been completed and the timetable change in December, a 15 - minute cycle was between Stavanger and Sandnes introduced. Between Ganddal and Øksnevadporten a goods station is also built.

The Jærbane had a branch line ( Ålgårdbanen ) with a length of twelve kilometers leading from Ganddal to Ålgård. On this route passenger traffic was operated until 1955, 1988, this line was closed for goods traffic and can be partially traveled during the summer months with Handcars today. The train station in Figgjo is now a museum.
