Jaime de Barros Câmara

Jaime Cardinal de Barros Camara ( born July 3, 1894 in São José, † February 18, 1971 in Aparecida ) was Archbishop of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro and participants of all sessions of the Second Vatican Council.

Life

Youth and Early Years of Priesthood

The second legitimate child of the marriage of the person responsible for orphans Joaquim Xavier de Oliveira, born in 1856 in San Jose, and Anna Barros de Carvalho, born in 1864 in Salvador, joined the seminar in São Leopoldo. He was in the male line descendant of João Gonçalves Zarcos, the re- discoverer of Madeira.

The Bishop of Santa Catarina, Joaquim Domingues de Oliveira, ordained him a priest on 1 January 1920 and was incardinated in the clergy of the diocese of Santa Catarina. In this particular church remained until 1930. He was rector of the Seminary of Our Lady of Lourdes de Azambuja Brusque and Rector of the Shrine Fátima Our Lady of Caravaggio de Azambuja 1927-1936. Pius XI. appointed him on 18 April 1935, chaplain of His Holiness.

Bishop

The Pope appointed him on 19 December 1935 Bishop of Mossoró. The Archbishop of Florianópolis, Joaquim Domingues de Oliveira, donated him on 2 February of next year in Florianópolis episcopal ordination; Co-consecrators were Pio de Freitas Silveira CM, Bishop of Joinville, and Daniel Henrique Hostin, OFM, Bishop of Lages. As a motto he chose Ignen Veni mittere.

On September 15, 1941, he was appointed Archbishop of Belém do Pará and introduced into the office on 1 January of the next year. During his tenure, he promoted the reform of the studies in the seminar, as the Colégio Progresso Paraense (now Colégio Santa Maria de Belém ), the headquarters of the Workers 'Party ' Circle Seminar and Measurement Seminar ( now Centro de treinamento Tabor in Icoaraci ) acquired. On 3 July 1943 he was appointed Archbishop of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro and introduced into the office on 15 September of the same year. He strongly supported the establishment of the Eastern Churches in Brazil, for example, by the construction of the church Igreja de São Basílio ( Melkite Greek Catholic Church ), which he defined as a jewel.

Cardinal

Pius XII. took him on 18 February 1946 as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Santi Bonifacio e Alessio on the College of Cardinals, he joined formally to his office on 22 February this year. It was the papal legate at the National Eucharistic Congress in Porto Alegre and took in October 1948 at the Inter-American Congress of the Association of Catholic education in Rio de Janeiro in 1951 and at the National Eucharistic Congress in Curitiba in March 1960 in part. On two conclaves, the John XXIII. and Paul VI. selected, he also took part.
